Scanning, 3D Modeling Fly-Through Video for Cliff Lodge Renovation

Project: Cliff Lodge at Snowbird

The project architect wanted to give their client a dynamic visual image a proposed plan for their redesign of the Cliff Lodge building at Snowbird which opened in 1971. The popular ski resort was showing its age and Vara 3D’s digital scanning provided an accurate comparison of the pre-existing conditions versus the virtual image of the new design and renovation.

The Vara 3D team worked closely with the architect to educate him about their scanning, modeling and 2D to 3D conversion capabilities. He was one of only three architects invited to submit a project proposal. The goal was to create an effective presentation showing his redesign was a good fit for a lodge full of skiers and snow boarders fresh off the slopes.

Vara 3D’s highly-trained team of experts completed the actual scan for the concierge area of the building within an hour and a half which provided the architect with a cost-effective, highly efficient collection of data. The initial request was a simple scan and blank model of an area in the lodge selected for the presentation.  The Vara 3D crew explained the options available and the architect understood the significant weight a “fly-through” video presentation would have to the building owner.

Watching the gliding visual image made the process of explaining the design proposal much easier and straightforward.  After the architect was awarded the project, Vara 3D’s team returned to collect more data and create models of all of the common areas and existing floor plans of Cliff Lodge’s eighth floor. This enabled the architect to add their design elements to the model and provide a visually appealing presentation of the project.

This companion video demonstrates how the scan and 3D model created by Vara 3D accurately show the existing building with the incorporated new design.

The detailed scan and vivid representation of the changes in the 3D model for the Cliff Lodge building allowed the architect to clearly illustrate their design for the renovation.

With a set up time of less than an hour for the concierge area of the building, and completion of scanning in 2 to 3 days, Vara 3D delivered value-packed services quickly.  And, the architect was successful in providing a visually appealing presentation of their proposal in a cost-efficient way.

The Vara 3D team provided the deliverables in 2D and 3D formats for Revit, AUTOCAD, and also Microstation.
